She was late. She was really late.
In all honesty, it wasn't her fault. The meeting had gone on a lot longer than she had alotted time for. The new recruits had been asking too many questions and, like a good second in command, she had been forced to sit around and answer them. Truthfully, it would not have been as bad if the questions the new guys asked hadn't been so stupid... or all the same.
Yes, they were a group of mutants. Yes, they were also a gang of humans. They were a mixed group, a big family where cultures mixed and meshed. They were close; if one got in trouble, all fought. No one was discriminated against, but that did not mean that anyone was allowed in. Once you got in, you were secure. But it took a lot to get inside the family.
Some of them had not been too happy with the fact that they were a mix of humans and mutants, but most had actually been okay with it. She and Scarab had been careful about who they chose, and they made sure to choose those who were not prejudiced against a whole group – unless that group was the government or the police.
But now she was running down the streets of Hell's Kitchen, hoping and praying that she could get back to the hotel in time. She only had about two minutes, and the hotel was nearly forty-five minutes away. But the warehouse was ten. If she could get there and get a call in to Scarab, then... He wouldn't worry. He'd know she was okay.
She had just turned a corner when something, something big and heavy, slammed into her. The cat-girl tried to let out a yowl or a scream, but the impact had knocked all of her breath out of her. She started to claw at the arms around her person, grinning when she felt blood, and heard her attack screech. Her fur bristled upon her realization that the screech was completely animalistic.
Almost cat like.
One of his hands grabbed the scruff of her neck, and her entire body when limp. She could not help but curse her animalistic reaction, and even tried to struggle. But the hand was replaced with the maw of a fellow animal, and Aeval whimpered. The cat in her knew what was going on.

Scarab walked the streets from the hotel, heading towards La Familia's warehouse. Aeval was running late--very late. And while the boss in him assured him everything was alright, the boyfriend part of him worried. Not being the type to sit around and wait, he listened to the boyfriend side.
He took the way she normally did, knowing she'd see him. But...he heard her first. Her yowl, actually. And it was answered by another...
He took off in the direction of the sound as fast as he could, being fast for his size. Sadly, that was still slow.

Aeval felt her attacker's claws dig into her body, ripping flesh and cloth all in one fell swoop. Though she struggled, her tail swishing madly, she could not even begin to fight him; he was bigger, stronger... He was definitely a big cat, whatever he was. Probably feral, or a wild cat. His scent certainly pointed to that.
Desperately, praying on of the members was around, Aeval let out a panicked screech. The monster behind her tightened his grip on her neck, his teeth digging into the point of almost breaking her skin. He stopped just before doing so, though, and even pulled back to lick her neck. A quiet rumble echoed in his chest, causing a shudder to go down her back.

Scarab heard the second screech, and ran even harder. He turned the corner, and saw her. In the jaws of another-cat being, and she was obviously protesting.
At that moment, something awakened inside him; a monster, buried deep under the monstrous appearance. And he snapped. He let out a roar of his own, somewhat of an enraged war-cry. Then, he charged the man, throwing his entire shoulder into the beast's side, knocking him to the ground before stomping on his leg.

She heard the roar a second before the weight was knocked off of her. It was a roar that shook her down to her very soul, a roar that had her whimpering, despite the knowledge that the owner was Scarab, her boyfriend - her mate. She had never heard him so upset, so furious.
It took a second for her to realize she was free. As soon as she did, however, she was on her feet, pressing up against the wall of a nearby building. Her wide, blue eyes watched as Scarab's foot came down hard on the cat's - a jaguar - leg. She winced at the crack of solid bone, and knew that he had just shattered her attacker's leg. Such was the strength of her mate.
The jaguar roared, clawing at Scarab's body. It was obvious he was afraid. He did not even seem to be angry that the giant bug had attacked him, just scared by the new face. That tugged at something in the back of her mind. Something instinctual.

The human side of Scarab would have stopped there. The human side would have left his now-crippled foe, taken Aeval elsewhere and checked to see if she was okay. But that Scarab wasn't currently in control. His breaths were quick, out of his mouth, each exhale accompanied by a growl.
The scratches did little more than make him angrier. He picked up the guy with one hand, slamming the figure into the nearby wall, then the neighboring one. He threw a punch to the guy's chest, then pulled him close, pincers closing around his throat. His eyes locked on Jag's, this would be the last thing Jag saw...

It clicked.
It took longer than Aeval expected, but it finally clicked. She understood now what this thing was, and why it was so... so animalistic. It was the opposite of what she was; instead of a cat-human, it was a human-cat - a jaguar who had mutated to gain some human characteristics.
It wasn't his fault. He had attacked her because she was female, he was male... and it was around mating season. That was what had caused this. Her stupidity made her snarl, and she quickly took a few steps forwards.
"Igs, wait!"

Aeval's voice began to bring him back to his senses, a little. "Por que?" he managed to ask, staring down Jag.
He'd tried to hurt her, worse. That just made his temper flare. It was unforgivable. In his mind, there was no reason for him to live. And no reason for her to want him too.
"Why? After what he tried to do. If I was any farther away, he would have. Why?"

Aeval hesitated, knowing that Scarab wanted nothing more than to just tear into the beast that had nearly hurt her, nearly raped her. But she could not let him do that, not to this animal. It was a cat; it was a fellow feline. Even worse, it had no idea of what it was doing; it just went on basic instinct, nothing more.
She would have to teach it, if she could keep Scarab from killing it.
"Because he's not human," she said, moving to stand beside him. She reached up, carefully placing a hand on his arm. Her eyes turned to the cat, softened. "I'm not... I'm not saying what he did was right, by no means. But... But he doesn't know. He's not a mutant human, Igs. He's a cat that's mutated to look like a human."

He listened, but it was the touch on his arm that snapped him back to his real self. He dropped the jaguar in a barely-alive heap on the asphalt. He shook his head, then put two arms around her.
"I don't know what came over me, Amora. I just...he...and I snapped." He chuckled. "Though it's certain if anyone wants you, they'll have to kill me, first." He kissed her cheek as his hands ran up and down her back.

Aeval leaned against him, nuzzling her head into his chest. "I know... I know..." She murmured softly, nodding her head. Her ears pinned back, even as she glanced down at the body on the ground. His side was still moving up and down, but it was obvious he was going to need medical help - fast.
A quiet whine escaped, a noise that was far too much like a dog's for such a feline to ever make.
"He needs help, Igs..." She murmured, reaching up to kiss his jaw. "As... as much as I know you want him dead, he needs help. It's not his fault what he did. He'll need to be taught. ...it stands to reason that if I mutated and have a bit of cat instincts and brain, he may have some human."
Aeval hoped she was right.

Scarab nodded, gently picking up the mutant-cat. "That we will. Now it's time to see what that healer you brought home can do. Though this is far worse than a scratch..."
---
Bekka stood over the mutant, who was lying across a bunch of crates covered by a blanked. "Never seen something this bad. One can only hope..." Her hands glowed blue white as she put them on Jag's chest. Suddenly, he was engulfed in the light. When it faded, he was fully healed, though tied to the crates.
"Hot damn..." Scarab whistled, then whispered to Aeval in Spanish. "She's a keeper."

Aeval nodded, though she did give Scarab a gentle bump with her hip. She had known the little thief would be a welcomed addition to the family, even if Scarab had doubted it at first. She was a good judge of people, and their powers. It was why she was second in command. Well that, and the years of experience she had with handling Scarab.
She walked over, gently placing her hand on the jaguar's arm. Her ears drooped, and she gave a soft whimper. Even if she was not supposed to show emotion like this in front of new recruits, she could not help but do so. The poor jaguar was so out of his element, far away from the forests he called home.
Now he was in the concrete jungle.
"The poor cub," she murmured, tail swishing once or twice.

"He'll be fine," Scarab said, "as long as he doesn't try that again." The last part, he added under his breath.
Bekka brushed her hair out of her face, chuckling softly. Little did her new bosses know, she'd brushed up on her Spanish just a bit. She looked down at the mutant.
"Interesting...it's almost like an animal trapped in a human body. Now that he's better...what...what happened to him?"
Scarab said nothing, then she added, "Can I keep him?"

Aeval hesitated at that question, looking over at Bekka. It wasn't because the jaguar had attacked her that she hesitated, but because she wanted to keep the feline close to her. She wanted to know that he was going to be okay, and that she could teach him right. It was an odd thought process, but it was still... It was what she wanted.
Still, she kenw that Bekka could take care of him. She could at least heal him, if he ever got into any trouble. And Scarab didn't like him too much, especially not after what he had nearly done to her. She sighed.
"I... I suppose..." She glanced over at Scarab, one ear pinning back.
